Ren again

Sophia and I are doing the Renaissance Faire again this year.  I have mixed feelings - everyone is so nice, and it is a lot of fun, but really, the demands on one's time and resources are obsene.  The hours are awful, the conditions are unpredictable, and the clothes are uncomfortable. Still, it is a chance to step outside oneself, to immerse oneself in a role outside one's reality, and escape.  For that, there is no substitute.

Not watching TV

My husband doesn't watch television.  Yes, he does sit on the couch, facing the television, while the television is on, but if you ask him what he is watching, he will tell you that he is not watching anything.  He is either channel checking, or killing some time while waiting for something else to happen, but he is definitely not watching tv.  This is particularly aggravating not because I care one whit for his viewing habits, but because while he is telling you in great detail about what is is doing that isn't really watching television, he isn't answering the real question - what is playing on the television.

With enough practice, one might think to not ask what he is watching, but what is playing.  However, that will backfire if one is at all interested in what they see on the screen, because in order to prove how uninterested he is in whatever may be playing, he will change the channel.  Sometimes he will change it just because I've entered the room and sat down.  I almost think he is deliberately trying to drive me away.  There is no sense to it - I'm not the sort who talks while watching tv, I sit quietly and enjoy the show.

Why can't two people sit and watch television together?

Julieton

There is a fairly new little site where you try to accumulate clicks so that your town will grow.  If you would like to see it, click http://julieton.myminicity.com/ and you will see mine (and help it grow).  The more you click (once per day), the more people move in.  It seems a silly way to get site views, but it intrigues me.

Pink Food

I went to the store for food today, and it was all pink.  At least, all the Betty Crocker food was pink on the top, announcing to the world that a portion of their profits are donated to the Susan B Komen Foundation.  All well and good, except one always wonders if the amount donated is greater or less than the amount spent to redesign the packaging for the foods.

I bought it anyway.

The one really good thing I bought was Concord Grapes.  They are the best grapes ever, and you can only get them for a short time each year.  I doubt there will be any left by morning, after my kids find them.

I also had to restock on Halloween candy.  Nobody in this house is willing to wait until Halloween to eat it, it seems.  I try to get a mixture - chewing gum for the older kids, non-chocolate for the boys who don't like chocolate, and of course, plenty of chocolate to be put in the bowl at the last possible moment, so that it doesn't get handed out and I can eat it later.

Sophie has a great costume idea - she will dress all in white, put a yello circle on her tummy, and wear devil horns and tail (deviled egg!).

As for me, I still fit my astronaut jumpsuit and my renaissance costume, I don't need any other costumes.

Iraq

My son, Gordon, tells me that he will join a unit next month that will be deploying to Iraq in August.

No, I'm not happy.
